![]() But dont think that the lack of a price tag means GIMP is lacking in features it. The GIMP selective capture tool comes very handy. GIMP (short for GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free alternative to Photoshop that more than holds its own. It works by downloading GIMP from a distributed network of BitTorrent users, and may improve download speed. BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing system. The installer contains both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of GIMP, and will automatically use the appropriate one. Try that with The GIMP and you will do.Īlso, I happen to take snapshots of application windows quite often. These links download the official GIMP installer for Windows (250 MB). Try drawing a circular selection and converting it to a path on Photoshop, you will never get a perfect circle. If you need to create graphics for your website or business, GIMP is a fantastic free alternative to Adobe Photoshop. I also like to use the gimp because its PATH function is very precise. The GIMP on the other hand is better at compressing RGB PNG’s and definitely does a much better job with JPEG’s. When working with indexed PNG’s (< 256 colors) I’ve noticed that Photoshop usually does a better job. GIMP is frequently touted as a free photo editor thats a viable alternative to Photoshop, but does it really stand up to this comparison We compare the two programs to find out. There are a couple off-shoots of GIMP, including GimpShop and GimpPhoto, which both try to make the user interface more similar to Photoshop. ![]() Tools and icons no longer were where they used to be! ![]() Some people are complaining about switching from Photoshop to The GIMP? Well switching from Photoshop 6.5 to later builts must have been traumatic in its own right. The Photoshop GUI on the other hand has set the standard for most other image editing software. I’ve been using both Photoshop and the GIMP for work (I’m a graphic designer) but I definitely started using The GIMP more frequently when Adobe brought those frigging changes to the post version 6.5 Photoshop interface. First of all Gimp is much cheaper than Photoshop -) The user interface is another thing: GIMP's GUI, well I think you either love it or you hate it. I guess the GIMP was born as an RGB photo-editing application, so it comes as a perferct too for designing for the Web. I suggest you return to drawing animals in Gimp and don’t comment on things you don’t know much about. Acording to you, Wine, Crossover, Disney and other companies are throwing money away trying to get Photoshop to run best possible on Linux, huh? People bugging Adobe to port it to Linux are just noobs talking? People saying one application they miss the most on Linux being Photoshop don’t know sh!t, huh? Yeah, we all just want to give $1000 for a l337 program on our OS, simply to brag about it. I’v never met any pro designer using Gimp, but maybe it’s just me. After doing designs for 15 years (web, banners, catalogs, posters, logos), I think I know what tool I want and somehow know which are good. Yeah, when doing something, tools are important, so your saying absolutely doesn’t fit here. It is a great place to learn and get used to the program at the same time. This is going away from topic and I even don’t understand what the hell you’re trying to prove but…I’m sorry I guess I got it all wrong, Gimp’s main goal is to become a “drawing tool” like MS Paint for average Joe to draw trees and stuff? My guess is this ain’t Pixel’s goal either, since you don’t earn jack from “amateurs”. Here you find lots of tutorials on how to do things in the program, from creating a logo to enlarging images with liquid rescale or creating desktop backgrounds. Once you have installed it on your system, you should check out the tutorials section that is available on the project website. The best way to get started is to download Gimpshop from the website listed above. Although only saving around 10 a month compared to Adobe subscriptions, GIMP gives you a chance to try out editing without commitment. I like many-many things in Gimp and I'd rather support free software which is as good as its $600 counterpart, so it's Gimp with Gimpshop for me! I'm sorry to say there is no Windows version yet, only Mac and Linux, but there is one on the way! If you're a developer you can grab the source from the homepage though. Menus have been reordered to, so if you've grown accustomed to Photoshop, you'll feel right at home in Gimp too. Many items that have caused mix-ups have been changed, for example Gimp's convolve tool has been renamed to "blur/sharpen", something actually understandable. This reorders your menus and restructures them to resemble Photoshop's, and very closely at that. You can get the best of both worlds though with a nifty addon to Gimp called Gimpshop.
